Just in: Shehu Sani Advises Tinubu Against Nepotism in Government Appointments

Former Senator Shehu Sani has called on President Bola Tinubu to prioritize competence over ethnic considerations in his government appointments. Speaking on Channels TV on June 30, Sani urged Tinubu to avoid repeating the mistakes of his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari.

Sani criticized Buhari's administration for its lack of cabinet reshuffles and slow replacement of ministers, attributing it to nepotism. "Ministers were retained for the entirety of Buhari's tenure, with no reshuffles, and replacements took months," Sani stated. He highlighted how service chiefs were kept in office despite their failures, negatively impacting the careers of other officers.

For Tinubu to achieve success, Sani emphasized the importance of prioritizing competence. "If this country has to move forward, competency must be the primary qualification for appointment," he asserted.

Sani also condemned the recent suicide bombings in Borno State, attributing them to Boko Haram insurgents. He urged vigilance and warned against complacency, noting that the expectation of improved security under leadership familiar with the region's issues had not been met.

"All major security apparatus were led by northerners at one point, yet the security situation worsened," Sani lamented, underscoring the need for effective and competent leadership to address Nigeria's challenges.
