The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has reported a significant increase in human rights abuse cases for June 2024, with 106,604 complaints lodged.
Anthony Ojukwu, the Executive Secretary of the NHRC, revealed the figures during the commission’s sixth dashboard meeting at its headquarters in Abuja. Ojukwu attributed the surge to heightened awareness among citizens and the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders.
“For the month of June, we have received an unprecedented number of 106,604 complaints. This increase is disturbing but not unexpected,” Ojukwu stated, adding, “This is a positive development and a testament to the concerted efforts of all stakeholders.”
He stressed that the rise in complaints highlights the success of targeted interventions and the importance of the monthly dashboard meetings in identifying and addressing key human rights issues in communities.
Hilary Ogbonna, a senior human rights adviser to the NHRC, emphasized child rights as a critical concern. “Children facing issues of survival and development are also at risk of child marriage, child labour, sexual abuse, denial of education, and abandonment,” Ogbonna said.
The report detailed regional data, with the North-Central region leading in reported cases at 29,462, including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Other regions reported as follows: South-East (9,164 cases), South-West (18,458), South-South (21,603), North-East (12,907), and North-West (15,101).
