A severe outbreak of whooping cough has resulted in the deaths of nine infants in Britain since November 2023, as reported by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
From January to May 2024, a total of 7,599 cases were recorded among both children and adults. The disease, known for its impact on the lungs and breathing tubes, spreads with alarming ease. The UKHSA emphasized that young babies are particularly vulnerable, facing severe complications and potentially fatal outcomes.
The agency's data reveals that over half of those infected are aged 15 or older and generally experience mild symptoms. However, the infection rate remains high among infants under three months old, who are at the greatest risk.
Healthcare professionals are strongly advising pregnant women and infants to receive whooping cough vaccinations. Alarmingly, the UKHSA noted that the vaccination rate among pregnant women has dropped below 60%. The agency stressed the importance of timely vaccinations during pregnancy and early childhood to shield vulnerable infants from serious illness.
