Paris 2024: Super Falcons Fall to Spain with Late Free-Kick

In a fiercely contested Group C match in Nantes on Sunday, Spain triumphed over Nigeria with a 1-0 victory, thanks to a superb free-kick from Alexia Patellas.

Spain took control of the game early, dominating possession as Nigeria opted for a defensive approach, led by the experienced Osinachi Ohale. Despite the early pressure, Spain struggled to break through Nigeria’s defense.

Esther Okoronkwo nearly opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 22nd minute, but her shot, set up by Rasheedat Ajibade, was saved by Spain’s goalkeeper Cata Coll. Ajibade later missed a crucial opportunity nine minutes before halftime after a precise pass from Asisat Oshoala.

Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie made a stunning save to deny Lucia Garcia just before the break. Spain continued to press after halftime, with Salma Paralluello’s goal being disallowed for offside in the 53rd minute. Ajibade squandered another chance in the 65th minute, shooting wide from inside the box.

Ohale’s crucial block prevented Aitana Bonmati from scoring ten minutes before the end. However, Patellas finally broke the deadlock in the 85th minute with a sublime free-kick that beat Nnadozie. In stoppage time, substitute Chiwendu Ihezuo missed a golden opportunity to equalize for Nigeria.

The Super Falcons are set to face Japan in their final group game on Wednesday.
