Senate Committee Launches Bipartisan Probe into Attempted Assassination of Former President Trump

The Senate Homeland Security Committee, led by Chair Gary Peters, announced the commencement of a bipartisan investigation into the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. The committee aims to expedite the investigation and hold hearings before the Senate's August recess.

Chair Peters emphasized the investigation's focus on identifying and addressing potential security breaches.

"We’re initiating a bipartisan investigation to scrutinize the events and determine necessary security enhancements," stated Peters. "Our goal is to expedite this process with detailed briefings for committee members and a likely hearing."

Drawing from their previous investigation into the January 6, 2021, Capitol breach, Peters noted the importance of past recommendations. "Our comprehensive security assessment post-January 6 has led to significant security practice improvements at the Capitol," he added.

Peters revealed ongoing discussions with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and an impending FBI briefing. While he has yet to speak with Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, Peters anticipates a full committee briefing soon.
