Osun APC Leader Urges Tinubu to Address Hunger Crisis
Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently address the severe hunger and starvation affecting millions of Nigerians.
In a press briefing in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, Oyintiloye highlighted the dire economic situation, stating that many Nigerian families struggle to secure even basic meals. He urged the President to heed the United Nations’ warning that 82 million Nigerians, approximately 64% of the population, could face hunger by 2030.
Citing data from the National Bureau of Statistics, Oyintiloye noted that food inflation reached a record 40.66% in May, surpassing previous months. He pointed out that essential food items such as rice, beans, and garri have become increasingly unaffordable for the average Nigerian.
Despite the country's rich natural and human resources, Oyintiloye criticized successive governments for failing to build a productive economy. He attributed this failure to corruption and an over-reliance on crude oil revenue.
While acknowledging President Tinubu's efforts to mitigate the crisis through various intervention programs, Oyintiloye argued that these measures have yet to significantly alleviate the situation. He called for the President to declare a state of emergency on hunger, starvation, and poverty.
“Hunger is a threat to national peace, and that is why the president must act very fast,” he stressed.
Oyintiloye also recommended the implementation of price control mechanisms to curb exploitative practices by traders and urged the reopening of the Benin Republic border to allow food imports. Additionally, he emphasized the need to address farm input shortages and insecurity to support farmers and attract young people to agriculture.
He concluded by appealing to Nigerians to continue supporting the President, expressing hope that ongoing economic interventions would eventually lead to the country's recovery.
