Senate President Godswill Akpabio has mocked those planning demonstrations against the country's economic hardship, suggesting that while they protest, government officials will continue with their regular activities. Speaking at a Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) event on Tuesday, Akpabio dismissed the idea of a regime change and emphasized unity within the government.
"Those who want to protest can protest, but let us be there eating," Akpabio stated, addressing the audience in Rivers State.
The protest, scheduled to start on August 1 and run until August 10, has garnered attention from high-level officials, including Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun. Egbetokun met with protest organizers in Abuja, proposing a virtual protest, but the organizers insisted on street demonstrations.
During his speech, Akpabio acknowledged the adverse effects of oil and gas activities on the Niger Delta region and promised legislative action to mitigate environmental damage. He assured that the National Assembly would collaborate with various agencies, including the NDDC and the President's office, to address these issues.
The National Assembly, under Akpabio's leadership, has scheduled an emergency session on the eve of the protest, indicating their commitment to addressing the nation's pressing concerns.
