The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared that the Igbo community is prepared to exit Nigeria, urging for a referendum to decide their departure. IPOB spokesman Emma Powerful responded to a social media user’s announcement of a protest, labeled "IgboMustGo," aimed at forcing Igbos to leave Lagos State from August 20 to 30.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State condemned the proposed protest, calling for unity. However, IPOB's statement criticized Sanwo-Olu, accusing him of ethnic profiling and suggesting that the protest may be backed by high-profile figures within Lagos State and the federal government.
Powerful stated that while the Igbo community is ready to leave Nigeria peacefully through a referendum, they will not be intimidated by threats. He urged for the release of IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and a referendum to determine whether the Igbo will remain in Nigeria or form an independent Biafra.
