In a remarkable show of athletic prowess at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Nigeria's D’Tigress and sprinter Favour Ofili have brought immense joy to their nation.
Favour Ofili, 21, showcased her exceptional talent by winning heat 6 of the women’s 200m with a time of 22.24 seconds, securing her place in the semifinals. She outperformed Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith, who finished second in 22.28 seconds, and Gina Bass-Bittaye, who came third in 22.84 seconds.
In a historic achievement, D’Tigress became the first African basketball team, male or female, to reach the Olympic quarterfinals after defeating Canada. Despite being ranked 12th, they triumphed over FIBA’s 3rd and 5th ranked teams.
Senator John Enoh, Nigeria’s Minister of Sports Development, commended their accomplishments in a heartfelt statement. “D’Tigress, today marks a historic achievement. By becoming the first African team to reach the Olympic quarterfinals, you have made a groundbreaking accomplishment,” Enoh stated.
He also praised Ofili's outstanding performance, saying, “Favour Ofili, your determination and talent shine bright. Overcoming obstacles, you excelled in the heat. We celebrate your collective triumph and urge you to strive for gold. Continue to excel!”
The victories of D’Tigress and Ofili have not only lifted the spirits of Nigerians but have also set a new standard for future athletes.
