Protest: Afenifere Criticizes Tinubu for Hypocrisy Over Protest Response

The pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has urged President Bola Tinubu to cease placing blame following the recent protests against his administration. The group emphasized that Tinubu, who once called for a revolution against former President Goodluck Jonathan, should not now fault others.

Prince Justice Fakiyesi, the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere loyal to Acting Leader Chief Ayo Adebanjo, criticized Tinubu’s recent speech, stating it failed to address the core issue of widespread hunger. Fakiyesi argued that it was hypocritical for Tinubu to label the protests as politically motivated, given that he had similarly agitated against Jonathan.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Fakiyesi remarked, "Tinubu called for a revolution during Jonathan’s tenure. Now, facing the same and even worse conditions, he blames others. We never believed mere dialogue would effect change; he has never altered his stance."

Fakiyesi suggested that Tinubu was reluctant to take responsibility for the policies that led to the unrest, noting, "When he announced the end of subsidies, he acknowledged that protests were inevitable. His policies knowingly incited public outcry, and he should accept the consequences."
