The Catholic Bishops of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province have expressed disappointment in President Bola Tinubu's reforms, stating they have failed to bring the promised renewed hope to Nigerians.
In a communiqué issued after their two-day meeting at Sacred Heart Pastoral/Retreat Centre in Orlu, the Bishops highlighted that the reforms have instead resulted in high inflation, hunger, and widespread discontent. The document was signed by Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji, Chairman, and Most Rev. Augustine Echema, Secretary.
“Our nation, Nigeria, continues to face many social and economic challenges that are bringing untold hardship to our people," the Bishops stated. "The reforms that were introduced at the inception of the current administration have not brought the renewed hope promised. Instead, inflation continues to skyrocket and hunger and anger continue to grow."
The Bishops criticized the government's calls for public sacrifice, citing a lack of prudent spending by leaders at all levels of government. They also supported the ongoing national hunger protest, acknowledging the youths' frustration with the country's deteriorating condition.
For Nigeria to achieve good governance and socio-economic stability, the Bishops emphasized the need for collective efforts to strengthen political institutions. They urged citizens to adapt to the tough times and reject corrupt practices.
